Terminal Mesothelioma Cancer-How to Recognise a Dying Mesothelioma Victim

By Bello Kamorudeen

When the mesothelioma victim begins to show signs of imminent death, it is the time to for the relatives and friends to come around to say final goodbyes to their loved one. One after the other, the family members and friends might spend time with the patient, holding hands, talking to the patient, or just sitting quietly by the patient.

It can also be a time to perform any religious rituals and other activities the patient desires before he/she passes on. It is a chance for many families and friends to express their love and appreciation for the patient and for each other.

This also the time to plan for what to do after the death of the patient, so that the family will not be confused about what to during this very emotional time. If the patient is in hospice, the hospice nurse and social worker will help you. If the patient is not in hospice, talk with your doctor about it so that you will know what to do at the time of death.

These are some of the symptoms that will be seen in a dying mesothelioma cancer patient:

Asbestos found during insurance repair, what is the impact to me ?

I own the leasehold on a two bedroom flat. A leak from the flat above has led to a buildings insurance claim. The builders started this morning and have found suspected asbestos. The removal of this, to complete the repair, is covered.

Asbestos was not mentioned in any documentation when I bought the property April 2006.

My question is what impact does this have on my ability to sell the flat and if the freeholder converted this flat in 1995 do I have any comeback to them ?

Thanks

Primary Peritoneal Cancer Prognosis -What Now?

Author: Faye Herl

A cancer diagnosis is devastating. A stage IV cancer diagnosis is even worse. Primary Peritoneal Cancer Prognosis is not great but it is manageable. This cancer mimics ovarian cancer in that few symptoms show up until it is quite advanced. Standard treatments include surgery and chemotherapy.

There are other forms cancer that seem to hide or be misdiagnosed until they are very advanced. One is GIST-Gastro Intestinal Stroma tumor. Just a few years ago, a diagnosis of this stomach lining tumor was enough to start making funeral arrangements. But that is not the case now. Thanks to advances in research and actually separating this type of tumor from other cancers that were all lumped into the stomach cancer category, a diagnosis of GIST is no more an immediate death sentence.

A couple of drugs on the market have made a big difference. One is called Gleevec and the other is called Sutent. Gleevec is usually the first line of defense. This drug is a protein inhibitor that attacks the tumor and shrinks it. It has a 70% success rate which is unheard of for most kinds of cancer.

Interestingly, it was initially used in the treatment of leukemia and was used by a doctor as a last ditch effort for a patient who was dying of GIST. It is now standard protocol for GIST treatment.

Gleevec is not without its side effects but most are manageable. One of them is short term memory loss. That's not a big deal to you are in line at the post office and can't remember where the package your are mailing is supposed to go.

Primary peritoneal cancer prognosis will also be more favorable as other drugs are developed for treatment of this specific type of Cancer. Research is ongoing and breakthroughs are being made all the time.

I just realized I worked with Asbestos, should I worry?

I am refinishing my basement and someone alerted me to the fact that the 150sq/ft. or so of old tiles I scraped up contained Asbestos! I worked with the stuff without a resperator or gloves, they came up pretty easily, but some of them broke apart. Should I be concerned? The damage is already done, but is this stuff (in such a small quantity) really that dangerous?

Is it possible to misdiagnose non-Hodgkin’s as mesothelioma?

My late husband was SO exposed to asbestos; but died from what was called untreatable Hodgkin's. I don't believe that and 10 years later, still looking for answers.

About Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum.

What is the mesothelium?

The mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body. It is composed of two layers of cells: One layer immediately surrounds the organ; the other forms a sac around it. The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that is released between these layers, allowing moving organs (such as the beating heart and the expanding and contracting lungs) to glide easily against adjacent structures.

How common is mesothelioma?

Although reported incidence rates have increased in the past 20 years, mesothelioma is still a relatively rare cancer. About 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the United States each year. Mesothelioma occurs more often in men than in women and risk increases with age, but this disease can appear in either men or women at any age.

Mesothelioma Symptoms

Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleura are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and abdominal pain and swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face. These symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions. It is important to see a doctor about any of these symptoms. Only a doctor can make a diagnosis.

The early symptoms of mesothelioma are often ignored, because they may be caused by a variety of ailments. These symptoms include:

pain in the lower back or at the side of the chest

shortness of breath

difficulty swallowing

cough

fever

fatigue

abdominal pain, weight loss, and nausea and vomiting (symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma)

Causes of Mesothelioma -

The primary risk factor for developing mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. In the past, asbestos was used as a very effective type of insulation. The use of this material, however, has been declining since the link between asbestos and mesothelioma has become known. It is thought that when the fibers of asbestos are inhaled, some of them reach the ends of the small airways and penetrate into the pleural lining. There the fibers may directly harm mesothelial cells and eventually cause mesothelioma. If the fibers are swallowed, they can reach the abdominal cavity, where they can contribute to the formation of peritoneal mesothelioma. Exposure to certain types of radiation as well as to a chemical related to asbestos known as zeolite has also been related to incidences of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Treatment -

Treatment for mesothelioma depends on the location of the cancer, the stage of the disease, and the patient's age and general health. Standard treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Sometimes, these treatments are combined. Surgery is a common treatment for mesothelioma. The doctor may remove part of the lining of the chest or abdomen and some of the tissue around it. For cancer of the pleura (pleural mesothelioma), a lung may be removed in an operation called a pneumonectomy. Sometimes part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing, is also removed.

Anybody know anything about Carswell AFB in Fort Worth?

My mom died of mesothelioma, which is the asbestos cancer, last year. We have no idea where she was exosed so I am trying to learn as much as I can about the places she lived. She lived at Carswell in the fifties. I would like to know if anybody knows anything about Carswell, or the area surrounding it. If there are any factories around that area, or how far away it is from the Summit and 5th streets (because 19 mesothelioma cases were diagnosed in that area).

Just any info you have would be helpful. Thanks so much!
