Like I said my home I believe has asbestos siding and it is in bad condition already so I want to have the house re-done with stucco. Now I am not sure if I can just add the stucco on top of the siding or do I need to remove the siding. Please no information on asbestos as I am aware of the dangers I just want to know if I should remove them or not. Thanks.
Most likely the siding will need removed to add a suitable subbase for the stucco to be applied. This would also be a good time to add insulation and vapor barrier since a house old enough to have this type of siding probably has insufficient insulation.
I suppose the job could be done without removal but I would not reccommend it.
The neatest thing about stucco is the possibilities for design are limitless. I’m kinda jealous, I wish I could update my home’s exterior. (cash flow right now)
I would use stucco with a imitation stone treatment 1/3 up and on the corners with a limestone ledger. I’ve seen cape cod homes done like this and it looks very nice.
If you decide to remove the asbestos you will have to hire a contractor to do that who is licensed by the state for such removal and this becomes very expensive to do.
The best thing is to overlay it with a new surface without disturbing it any more than necessary and to keep the surface as wet as possible to prevent dust from the asbestos. – Either way you will need to check with your local building permit office to see if this is possible in your area.
The best approach to cover over the existing siding is "Hardi-Board" it last forever and will not rott. You can see the product at The Home Depot. And it is awesome stuff we use it all the time.
Either way You will probably have to hire an asbestos contractor, becuase even if You go over it You will be securing the siding with fasteners, which will enter the asbestos and cuase dangerous dust.
