Can a condo be FHA-approved yet contain a popcorn ceiling that has asbestos?

My condo was built in 1986 and all the units have popcorn ceilings (unless removed by their owner). I have to remove some of the ceiling for drywall ...



My condo was built in 1986 and all the units have popcorn ceilings (unless removed by their owner). I have to remove some of the ceiling for drywall work, but learned that popcorn ceilings used to have asbestos.

    They didn’t in 1986, they stopped using it in the 60′s. The FHA inspector will know better then that.

    Your 1986 ceiling probably doesn’t have asbestos.

    My late ex-husband used to work at Johns Manville which was an asbestos plant. They closed down in the very early 80′s (Around 1980 or 1981) when it was discovered that asbestos was quite hazardous. I doubt very much that a condo built in 1986 would contain asbestos.

    Popcorn ceilings installed prior to 1978 may contain asbestos. A condo built in 1986 should not have asbestos in the ceiling. Even if it does, FHA does not care about that. My husband and I bought a house last month using an FHA loan. The house was built in 1976 and may have asbestos in the ceiling, but they did not test for it when the FHA inspection was done.
