I was reading a leaflet on asbestos exposure and it said that most people who are exposed to asbestos do not become ill its usually those that have worked with asbestos for years and that being exposed to asbestos does not mean that you will develop an asbestos related disease, under that paragaph it said that children are especially prone to developing cancer after exposure to asbestos, do you think that means that ALL children that are exposed to asbestos will develop cancer or just more likely than adults

One Response to “Childhood asbestos exposure.?”

  1. NaNaNa says:

Asbestosis or Mesothelioma (cancers from asbestos exposure) has a latency period of 20-40 years. That is why if children are exposed to it, they have a greater chance of getting cancer from it, because most likely they will still be alive in 20-40 years, as someone who is 60 may not. Asbestos does not affect children worse though, it is simply bad for anyone.
Asbestos exposure usually has to be for prolonged periods of time to develop the cancers though. This means someone who has worked with asbestos day in and day out for years without using any type of PPE (personal protective equipment).
We are exposed to asbestos everyday. Most car brakes are still made with asbestos. So everytime someone applies their brakes, they are spreading asbestos.
The reason that we still use asbestos is because it is a wonder material. Asbestos is a fiber and is fire-resistant and also does not break down from harsh chemicals. This is also what makes it so dangerous to humans-once its in your lungs, nothing will break it down, so it will stay there forever.
Usually, unless you are being exposed to it in great quantities everyday, don’t worry about it. If you are, then you need to seek more information and learn how to protect yourself.
