How can you tell the differnce without getting it tested?
Someone told me that if the popcorn texture is not hard i.e softer texture that will crumble without wetting then it should not have asbestos.
Can anyone with expertise tell me how I might be able to tell without getting it lab tested.
I have seen some popcorn ceiling and mine looks different, as it is not hard it just like styrafoam
thanks
Without knowing at all the age of your ceiling, Asbestos was outlawed and "removed’ from the market back as far as 1975.
That said, Vendors may not have been so quick to remove any of its forms from inventory.
I’d still take it to someone knowledgable and qualified (Locally) to quell any doubts. In any case, at the very least, you should be using masks to remove any substance.
As answer one states; it’s likely you don’t have to call in a HAZMAT team.

there is NO popcorn asbestos. tell that person to stick to stealing lunch money and leave you alone!
The reason your ceiling looks different is because there are many different ways to do it, depending on how thick or thin is was put on. People also sometimes think all textured ceilings are popcorn and that is not the case. Either way I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.
