I just want to replace a few of the shingles that have gotten damaged. I do not have to remove all of them in order to sell the home. I do appreciate all the help.
Ok, let’s dispell some of the hype here…shingle siding containing asbestos is not, in itself harmful. The harm comes in drilling, cutting, or some other form of altering the siding, which creates dust from the product. It is this dust that, containing asbestos fibers, that is dangerous.
To remove asbestos siding, you have to, in some states, use a licensed contractor.. and it is very expensive.
Anytime you are working on shingles containing asbestos, it is wise to take certain safety precautions, like wearing a dust mask, and eye protection.
Finding replacement shingles can be a challenge. I would check with the neighbors first, then spread my search out to the rural areas. Someone may have some in a crawl space (lol, I do)
I happen to have the kind of asbestos shingle on my home, that has a vertical wood grain pattern, and a curved lower edge, (scalloped). I have had the home state inspected, and was told the above information. I do NOT have to have the siding removed…. it IS illegal for me to drill into it, etc.
Ive got a few extra shingles, as I said, under my home, if you think they sound like yours, send me an email. My home isnt nearly as old as yours, so there is a good possibility they will not match, but I’m willing to help, if I can.
You can’t by asbestos anymore.
2nd hand, demolition sites.. use imagination
Asbestos Has Been Taken Off The Market Because Of The Dangerous Side Effects It Can Have. I Recommend Replacing It With Something Else
you ought to get rid of asbestos right away and replace them with a better shingle
my landlord is suppose to replace my siding this summer for the same reason. you are going to have to have all the siding replaced. it’s a very expensive project i know.
Why would you want to?!? Asbestos has been known to cause health problems?!?
You’ll have to get replacement shingles made from another material. I think they can match them up pretty well with what you have now.
Asbestos has been classified as a dangerous material. But, the good news is, there are some companies that make shingles out of safer materials that look just like your asbestos shingles. I’m not sure where to find them, but try Yahoo! or Google it
Do NOT deal with asbestos. The small fragments get caught in your lungs and cause permanant damage to them since you can’t get them out. Be careful. Hire professionals to deal with the shingles when or if you can afford it.
You’d have to make a change like that before you could ever put the house on the market anyways, so it’s inevitable. I know it would be very expensive, but asbestos has been proven to cause serious health problems. In a house that old, you’ll want to make sure that you have no peeling and/or lead-based paint, also. Can cause developmental problems and retardation in children. Your local health department can give you all the guidelines you need for both of these projects, and tons of information, on the hazards involved and anything else you might want to know.
hey not a good idea
Leave it alone not possible to replace (not that u would want to)
Most people go over it with a foam board and new siding
Touching it and removing it can get you in trouble with your health for one and second with the law.
Asbestos is alot like fiberglass. AS it lays it is usually safe, when disturbed it breaks into airborne particles waiting to cling to anything. Once in your lungs it is not removed period.
Call your local building inspector and ask what is common practice for your area.
He will know above all others the best course of action
thats really sad. asbestos is deadly
There is siding currently made to resemble the older scalloped asbestos siding. I have no idea where on God’s green earth you are but in S.E. Michigan you can try Durst’s Lumber in Berkley Michigan or Banner Cashway of Detroit and Brook’s Lumber in Detroit.
You have go for Fiber glass sheets instead of cement sheet which are ban nowadays. They are available with the same dealer who are dealing with construction material.
