We are planning to take up some old linoleum and someone mentioned that there may be asbestos that would get in the air. What is the best way to protect ourselves besides wearing a mask?

If the sheet vinyl was manufactured BEFORE1984, then yes, there is asbestos in the backing. If it was put in AFTER 1984, then there is no asbestos. If when you start scraping and you discover black adhesive, which is known as "cutback", that contains asbestos and petroleum.

If there is no black adhesive, wear protective goggles and a mask, keep the vinyl backing wet. By keeping it wet, you will keep the asbestos fibers out of the air.

If you discover black glue, put down a new layer of underlayment and leave it alone. Even if you do manage to get the adhesive up….there will still be a petroleum residue on the floor, WHICH WILL react with any new adhesive, or cementious floor patch you try to install over it.

asbestos can only legally be removed safely by certified people. you can go over it though.

why take a chance put a new sub floor down right over it- it will save you time and money! removing asbestos is not a do it yourselfer project !!! most places have strict laws against it however leaving it in tact and apply a new floor will not harm you.

amo45 is correct. leave the old lino down, and put your new floor over it.
