I dry-scraped about 200 vinyl-asbestos tiles without protection.

I'm really scared right now because of this. The worst part is that I won't know till 10-40 years from now if I will get cancer or anything.

I know now that I've been exposed to asbestos, I cannot get rid of it and my risk of getting disease or cancer has increased. I'm reaaaallllyyyy scared right now.

I really hope it's not as bad as I think.

Information on obtaining Breast Milk for sick relative?

Hi -
My father hasn't been given long to live due to asbestos induced cancer. I have researched (and he has already started) alternative medicine treatments in addition to his chemotherapy. I read several resources that mention some of the essential nutrients a body becomes deficient in overtime are found naturally in breastmilk. I am wondering if anyone knows if there is milk banks that support illnesses (rather than just premature babies) or how one can go about obtaining bmilk from a private source.

Thank you in advance
D.

The government says that building with asbestos/ lead can’t be torn down, is this really true?

Someone said that someone they know worked for an asbestos removal team. That it was really dangerous work. Finally law makers passed legislation that people had to stop tearing them down because it was a greater health risk to the workers and people living in the immediate area to tear the building down , due to it is old, it breaks,a and not in one piece, than it is to just leave them standing. All it takes is the smallest piece of asbestos in your lungs for you to develop serious lung and other illnesses.
What do you think, could they evacuate the buildings? I see people living in brand new buildings all the time that says "This building is known to the state of California to cause cancer" So the problems are that they are building more buildings with toxins, and/ or leaving dangerous buildings just standing, giving off fumes and maybe not evacuating them. Something seems wrong?

Asbestos Mesothelioma - Gendicine, Could It Be the Next Promising Cure For Cancer?

Author: Paul J. Folkmann

Europe and the United States are probably still a year away from licensing gene therapy, however, there are currently at least  two clinical trials testing gene therapy for mesothelioma. They include the University of Pennsylvania and the Louisiana State University. Unfortunately, gene therapy research took a big blow in 1999 when teenager Jesse Gelsinger died during a gene therapy clinical trial at the University of Pennsylvania.

Despite that, China is now the only country in the world that has already approved gene therapy. On October 16, 2003, the drug named Gendicine was approved by the State Food and Drug Administration of China. Gendicine had more than 5 years of clinical trials before it was approved. They have currently used this therapy on over 4500 patients and have followed their patient's progress for over 6 years. Now, hundreds of cancer patients from around the world are travelling to Beijing to receive this leading edge treatment.

The clinical trials of Gendicine included 135 patients and results showed that 64% of patients showed tumour regression after 8 weekly injections in combination with radiation therapy. According to the clinical trial results, using Gendicine with chemotherapy and radiation therapy can improve the efficacy by 3 times. The only side effect of Gendicine is a typical overnight fever.

Since there are no other approved gene therapy treatments in the world, many desperate cancer patients from North America and Europe are travelling to Beijing, China to receive treatment of Gendicine.

Richard Weissenborn from Texas, USA, had tongue cancer that had spread to his lymph nodes and was given two months to live in July of 2006.  He was treated with Gendicine and chemotherapy by  Dr. Li Dinggang at the Haidan Hospital in Beijing at a cost of about ,000 U.S. The following is the contact information for the hospital:

29th Zhongguancun Street, Haidian District, Beijing, China.
Tel :010-62583027
E-mail: hdyy2008@yahoo.cn
Postcode: 100080

After two cycles of treatments, over two months, a pet scan showed that he was cancer free.  The controversy around this story is that even though Richard's cancer was gone there are some doubts as to whether the chemotherapy or Gendicine cured it.  Dr. Mark Persky, a cancer specialist remarked that "According to my review, there's really no way of telling whether one or the other caused tumour regression".

In a healthy cell, there is a gene called the p53 gene, which can repair DNA, arrest cell growth, and initiate a cellular self destruction if the cell damage is too great as in the case of cancer.  However, in a study by the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine in Beijing, they found that there was a high occurrence of p53 gene damage in asbestos related cancers such as mesothelioma.

Gendicine works by reactivating the p53 gene, which acts as tumour suppressant but is shut off in a cancer cell because it may become deactivated by ns such as asbestos, chemicals and radiation. Gendicine treatment uses a virus as a medium to carry the p53 gene into the cancerous cells and causes the p53 gene to reactive and initiate self destruction (apoptosis) of the cancer cell.

Mesothelioma asbestos cancer

Author: alex

In the 20th century many people have been exposed to asbestos not even knowing it. Asbestos is a fibrous silicate mineral notable for its chemical- and heat-resistance and electricity non-conducting. Asbestos was widely used in industry and everyday life until 1980 when the EU and many other developed countries have banned it.

When swallowed or inhaled asbestos can stay in the human body producing toxic effect which may result in a number of serious diseases, such as asbestosis, Mesothelioma (Mesothelium cancer), lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, colorectal cancer, and other illnesses.

Mesothelioma (also known as "asbestos cancer") is a most common asbestos-related type of cancer.  The Mesothelium is a cellular membrane lining certain cavities of the human body. Mesothelioma may develop in lung, abdominal, scrotal, and heart sac cavities, the four types of M. being called Pleural, Peritoneal, Testicular, and Pericardial. In 70 percent of cases Mesothelioma is pleural in origin.

Up to 3000 cases of malignant Mesothelioma are registered in the United States every year.

Mesothelioma is often diagnosed at its later stage because its symptoms usually appear 20 to 50 years after the initial asbestos exposure. Another reason of untimely diagnosis is that the symptoms of Mesothelioma (i.e. chest pain, continual coughing, short breath, fatigue or fever etc) resemble less severe and quite common conditions, such as influenza.

Mesothelioma is a cancerous disease which causes abnormal growth and division of the mesothelium cells. They can invade and damage the adjusting tissues and organs and the cancer cells can also spread from their original location to other parts of the body. Mesothelioma mostly starts in the peritoneal cavity. More than 90% of mesothelioma cases are connected with asbestos exposure. Smoking combined with asbestos exposure significantly increases a person’s risk of developing mesothelioma.

Asbestos Lung Cancer Types and Treatment

Author: Josh Spaulding

Lung cancer of asbestos workers has increased greatly over the years. This is obviously due to the fact that the workers are exposed to the asbestos and breathe it in on a daily basis. This lung cancer (mesothelioma) is even more significant among the asbestos workers who smoke cigarettes.

Most lung cancer caused by excessive exposure to asbestos starts in the lining of the bronchi. The bronchi are the tubes in which the trachea or windpipe divide. It can also begin in other areas such as the alveoli, trachea, or bronchioles. The cancer usually develops slowly but once it occurs the cancer cells break away and then it spreads throughout various other body parts.

The most common places for people to breathe in asbestos is in mines, mills, factories, homes with asbestos, construction sites, during automotive repair, and pipefitting.

There are two major lung cancer types and they are:

- small cell lung cancer - The cancer cells are small and round.

- non-small cell lung cancer - The cancer cells are larger.

There have even been times when the cancer has a feature of both types. With small sell lung cancer the cells can multiply quickly and form large tumors. The tumors can then spread to the lymph nodes and to other various parts of the body.

There is treatment for asbestos lung cancer but it usually depends on the patient's health and the type of lung cancer that they have. It also depends on the size, location, and the extent of the tumor.

The different types of treatments are surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and photodynamic therapy.

The surgery is done to remove a part of the lung but it all depends on where the tumor is. It is a very serious procedure!

By using Chemotherapy, the cancerous cells are killed with drugs. Radiation works by destroying the cancer cells in the treated area. And lastly, the photodynamic therapy uses light to kill the cancerous cells. It is done by injecting a chemical into the bloodstream and is absorbed by the cells. The light then activates the chemical, destroying and killing off the cancerous cells.

Asbestos and Lung Cancer

Author: Jizmack Baraceros

Information about asbestos lung cancer provide that there is no cure for asbestos lung cancer as the disease is detected very late in its development stage. Therefore eliminating chances of survival in the stage wherein the disease can still be controlled. What remains to be the only solution in the battle against asbestos lung cancer is to stay away from asbestos and minimize exposure as much as possible. Prolonged asbestos exposure causes lung cancer. However, the effects of the exposure develop and progress through the years and manifests only after the development is in its later stages. Asbestos exposure causes lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis, along with many other similar diseases which are related to the respiratory tract. Needless to say, prolonged or repeated exposure can prove to be fatal.

Asbestos exposure causes damage to the lungs and other vital organs in the respiratory system. This is manifested by oughing, a pain in the chest wall, abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, the existence of fluid around the lungs, dramatic weight loss, fatigue, among others. All of which are common symptoms in lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.

More often that that, these individuals who are suffering from asbestos cancer are those individuals who are poor enough to begin with. Individuals who gamble their lives and health in hopes of providing for their families. Which is why it is alarming to know that these same individuals who suffer from poverty are the ones who are more easily subjected to asbestos cancer. . Justice is needed to be served, or at least the proper compensation for these victims of asbestos cancer.
