how much does it cost to remove asbestos?

In california…can you remove it yourself? If removing tiles with asbestos glue that are frail, do we need to contact the local health authorities. Is it expensive to have them come out and do the job? How dangerous is it to do yourself and can you simply "cover" it with a new floor, such as hardwood or even re-cement the floor…

We are in the process of remodeling our guest bedroom. When we pulled up the carpet we found vinyl flooring underneath. What is the likelihood of the glue used containing asbestos? We started pulling up one of the tiles, but stopped. I know we can get a piece tested or do it ourselves. Does anyone know where to find a DIY kit?…or is that a bad idea. Thanks!!

I live in an upstairs apartment. However, downstairs 3 apartments contain asbestos tile. So, the professionals come in to remove the asbestos. They used some kind of solvent to glue the asbestos together so that when they remove the asbestos the asbestos fibers wouldn’t fly all over the air. I would really want to know what kind of solvent they are using and if the solvent they used are toxic or not because we have been smelling it for a week now. It smelled bitter and smelled like gas too. It makes our food taste bitter. And also, will the asbestos fibers get into the upstairs apartment. Should we be concerned about these things?

We want to make sure we seal in any of the remaining asbestos dust – but we’d also like it to be a water proofer so we can glue down hardwood floor a few weeks later. We’re getting the masks, and we’re putting plastic in the doorways and making sure we’re safe while removing it – we just want to be prepared w/ the right kind of sealer and I’m not sure what kind to get. Brand names anyone?
we have not removed the asbestos yet.. we’re planning the job before we start! We’d like the sealer to lock in the remaining asbestos fibers and also water proof the concrete for hardwood flooring glue down installation afterwards. we are in the humid south!
