Hi, I have been renting this house for 4 years, Just discovered that this house has lea paint, and asbestos. Can a landlord legally rent under these conditions? If I bring it to their attention to they have to remove it? Can they leave hazardous conditions like these in a rental house?

If there IS asbestos in the unit, how much danger are we in? She said she has painted the walls several times over the years.

I don't want lung cancer 5 years from now!!
Oh, she said it may also be on the ceiling.
I'd say it was built before the 1970s.

I live in NY if that helps. My landlord left notices on all of our doors saying that they will be removing asbestos from the basements of our townhouses. If this problem was known prior to my occupancy of the townhouse, was the landlord required to disclose this information?

i asked on yahoo answers for people to guess the age of my apartment, the average answer is 1920's - 1930's or maybe slightly older. I wanted to know when they started using asbestos in homes for any reason (insulation probably), because my landlord wants to replace the ceiling, and he really doesn't think about these things before he starts hacking away.
