My name is Fiona and my best friend has cancer. Its called Malignant Mesothelioma. It is extremely deadly, really rare, and most people only live 24 months after diagnosis. But because it took her doctors so long to diagnose, they are predicting she only has three months. I have known this person almost my whole life and I love her so so much.
I want to do something really special for her, something that will show her how much i love her and how much i have appreciated my life with her. This news is fairly new to me, so i don't have a real clear idea of what i should do. What would you do?
Hi, My mother has been diagnosed with Malignant Mesothelioma. Subsequently she has been operated and Extra Plural Pneumenectomy performed. That has been followed with Radiation Therapy. Now CT - Scan has been done, which shows collection of fluid in left hemi thorex (same area where surgery performed) and one suspicious nodule. Are there any radiologists who can review the CT findings for correct second opinion?
I know, I have option of visiting a qualified Radiologist, but I would want some one from recognized cancer institute and having experience of Mesothelioma / lung cancer to do the review. I can send the CD or alternatively, I can upload CD on to a file hosting website and provide link for download and review.
Malignant Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer that occurs within the body at a section called the Mesothelium. Mesothelioma is known to be divided into the three main categories of Pleural Mesothelioma (70% of all Mesothelioma cases), Peritoneal Mesothelioma, and Pericardial Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can affect workers working in Abestos mills, or just from being at a place constructed with traces of Abestos and other toxic substances within the materials used to construct the area someone is in.
Often times, those diagnosed with Mesothelioma have no clue that they have been exposed to the cancer causing substance usually until years later when the symptoms caused by Mesothelioma begin to emerge. Mesothelioma is a horrible case, but with the right type of Mesothelioma attorney/laywer, one can be entitled to anywhere from thousands to even millions of dollars in damages.
Mesothelioma treatment options can be discussed with your physician. The treatment options for mesothelioma is often on the pricey side, and that is where attorneys can help you get payment help from employers that may have caused your Mesothelioma.

Pericardial mesothelioma accounts for about half of all pericardial tumors and is extremely rare. This cancer accounts for about 6% of all mesothelioma cases, these tumors are typically diffused and tend to cover the whole heart.
Pericardial mesothelioma affects the pericardium which is the membrane made up of mesothelial cells that surrounds and protects the heart. This membrane has two layers: A} an outer layer called parietal pericardium B} an inner layer called the visceral pericardium {epicardium}
Cause
Unlike in the case of pleural mesothelioma, there is no clear link between this cancer and exposure to asbestos fibers, but a number of patients with pericardial mesothelioma have a history of exposure to asbestos.
Some schools of thought believe that it is the inhaled asbestos fibers in the lungs that travel via blood from the lungs to the heart, although this theory is not supported by conclusive evidence.
When asbestos fibers get lodged in the pericardium, the body is unable to excrete the asbestos fibers and they remain stuck in the pericardium. These fibers over a long period of time cause the pericardial cells to undergo changes that result into cancerous transformation.
The cancer cells divide without control and they eventually lead to the thickening of the pericardial membranes eventually causing development of the tumors. These changes lead to the accumulation of fluids in between the two layers which combined with the thickening of these layers result in the compression of the heart.
Symptoms
Most of the symptoms are caused by the accumulation of fluids and the thickening of the pericardial layer. The common symptoms are: A) Heart palpitations or irregular pulse (arrhythmias) B) Chest pain C) Murmurs (abnormal heart sounds) D) Cough E) Dyspnoea (shortness of breath) F) Fatigue H) Fever or night sweats I) Orthopnoea (breathlessness on lying down)
These symptoms are not specific for the cancer, making the clinical diagnosis very difficult.
Diagnosis
After getting a clinical diagnosis a series of tests can be done to locate the cancer and identify the cancer cells.
-MRI, Magnetic Resonance Imaging
This is useful in assessing and determining the extent of development of the cancer.
-Biopsy
This involves the removal of pericardium tissue or fluid for laboratory test to confirm the presence of mesothelioma cells.
-Chest x-ray
This helps to identify the tumor, there is a characteristic shape of the heart on the x-ray film when there is a tumor of the pericardium.
-Chest CT scan
This also helps to identify the tumor.
Treatment
Pericardial mesothelioma patients are not usually suitable for surgery, except in rare cases where the cancer is diagnosed very early and surgery may be done to remove small localized tumors.
This type of surgery is very risky because of the proximity of the heart.
Palliative treatment is often the only option for treating pericardial mesothelioma, this type of treatment is aimed at improving the patient's quality of life and reducing the severity of symptoms caused by the accumulation of fluid in the pericardium.
Fine needle aspiration may be done to drain the accumulated fluid surrounding the heart. Radiotherapy could also be used to shrink the tumor to alleviate the symptoms caused by the compression of the heart by the accumulating fluid. The proximity of the heart and lungs however makes this a very risky procedure.
Prognosis
The prognosis of this type of mesothelioma is very poor, about 50 -60% of all cases die within 6 months of diagnosis. Occasionally few patients survive for longer periods following treatment with partial surgical resection and radiotherapy.

Just found out that not all asbestosis is cancerus. I can't find anything on non-cancerus mesothelial hyperplasia of the lungs. All my rearches turn up malignant mesothelioma. Whats up????
Whats the treatment? Is there treatment? My MD refused to talk to me about it. I only found out by reading my lung biopsy pathology report. My specialist quit me before I could ask for treatment. Go figure? "At least do no harm"? right
Please don't tell me to ask a MD. That is like Duuuu!! Keep in mind I live in USA, not Canada, so finding a specialist in this field who is about helping vs ego & statis is VERY difficult. And I'm also working class & a person of color , so finding a specialist who will even glance my way is like finding a needle in a haystack.
Pleura mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs. This isn't a main type of lung cancer; it is a cancer of the serous membranes.
The affected tissues line a number of organs within the center of the body, which includes the lungs. Even though pleura mesothelioma is the most common of type of the disease, it can affect the additional organs as well.
The stomach cellular lining, peritoneum, surrounding the heart, pericardium, and then can propagate to the lung area. While pleura mesothelioma is often referred to as asbestos lung cancer, it is incorrect. This particular cancer does not originate in the lungs but rather have metastasized to the lung.
Asbestosis is a type of asbestos lung condition that is in the lung area.
Unfortunately it is frequently mixed up with pleura mesothelioma.
This particular type of cancer, pleura mesothelioma, is brought on by asbestos breathing. The asbestos becomes imbedded in the lung lining, pleura, and over a lengthy period of time due to infection, can turn out to be cancerous growths. It can take as long as 20-50 years for the cancer malignancy to develop.
In unusual instances it has been associated with the breathing of other fibrous silicates, irradiation and thorotrast (intrapleural thorium dioxide). Most usually nevertheless, it is felt that asbestos fiber is the main cause.
The initial appearance is one of several tumor masses. The outside surface is generally much more affected than the visceral or inner area. The lower lobes of the lungs are usually the ones that are afflicted and it is believed that this is due to the law of gravity. The right lung is more frequently identified also with the much larger size of the lung thought to be the reason.
Frequently a diagnosis is not made till there are huge quantities of the growths within the pleura. As a secondary cancer pleura mesothelioma may appear from metastasis from the breasts, ovaries or intestinal tract. Lymphoma can also increase the risk of mesothelioma.
Symptoms
Initially the affected individual may complain of chest muscles pain. Frequently the problem is not of chest pain, but rather of shoulder joint or belly pain. The patient can easily become short of breath. coughing develops and fat loss due to anorexia, loss of appetite also can be found. Pleural effusion, fluid on the lungs, is also common with this type of mesothelioma. Often the fluid build up will also be in the abdomen and be a pronounced ascites. Often that accumulation of liquid is the first key issue that the individual has.
Fatigue, anemia and blood in the sputum are also indications of the disease. It is conceivable to really feel a bulk in the stomach and have difficulty with bowel movements.
Blood clots can build in the problematic veins. Low blood sugar and jaundice are listed as signs and symptoms. The individual is also more probable to produce blood clots in the lungs.
Prognosis
Mesothelioma has a bleak diagnosis. Several scientific studies have shown that the typical success rate after positive analysis is about eight months. Other elements additionally are taken into consideration. The general survival rate can be affected by the particular type of mesothelioma cells are present. Biphasic cells have proved to be the cells that will lead to the shorter success time.

Mesothelioma symptom relief is the central focus of care for the mesothelioma patient deemed incurable. Pain management will vary with each patient. The mesothelioma patient's pre-existing conditions and exacerbating conditions are factors in determining the best mesothelioma symptom relief and palliative care plan available. However, there are similarities in mesothelioma treatment and symptomatic relief for pleural mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma.
Almost every cancer patient, mesothelioma cancer patients included, experiences painful difficulty breathing during the last stages of cancer. Medical studies have indicated that as many as 70% of terminal cancer patients experience painful difficulty breathing. With diseases such as pleural mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma and lung cancer, painful breathing and shortness of breath occurs during all of the cancer stages, not just the terminal stages.
Difficulty breathing is frightening for the mesothelioma patient, the caregiver and family members. The fear of imminent death and helplessness suddenly becomes unexpectedly more real. Mesothelioma symptom relief for breathing difficulties should include emotional care as well as physical symptom relief. Relaxation techniques should be taught, and it should be stressed that there needs to be adaptations to daily activities to reduce breathing difficulty. Lifestyle changes will be in order to control mesothelioma breathing difficulties, and the most stubborn mesothelioma patients need to be convinced that this is the best mesothelioma treatment for them. Defining a new lifestyle as a awell deserved vacationa can help instigate a transition.
Mesothelioma symptom relief for physical pain from breathing difficulties can be provided by learning, advising and providing for the patient the best position of their body for proper air flow. A fresh stream of air from a window or a fan can provide mesothelioma symptom relief during breathing difficulty. Teaching the patient hyperventilation techniques can be very useful for the patient's self-monitoring of their mesothelioma treatment. A mesothelioma patient with trouble breathing needs to learn how to purse their lips at the first sign of breathing trouble, stay calm, relax their shoulders, back, neck and arms, then aflopa themselves into relaxation. Until this technique is mastered, learning how to breathe out slowly is an important step in breathing management.
Mesothelioma patients must realize that anxiety breeds anxiety. If a patient is afraid that they are going to die at the moment they are experiencing breathing difficulty, their body will respond by producing more anxiety, and more breathlessness. This is an emotional and physical response, not merely emotional.
Oxygen is sometimes prescribed for mesothelioma symptom relief; however physicians report that some patients become unnecessarily dependent on oxygen. For other patients, oxygen is their lifeline of mesothelioma treatment. Oxygen therapy also requires a review of whether intermittent or continuous therapy provides the best relief for their mesothelioma symptoms. Mesothelioma treatment with oxygen therapy will also consider whether to use oxygen tanks or an oxygen concentrator.
There are also medications for mesothelioma symptom relief of breathlessness. Anxiolytic drugs Lorazepam, Diazepam, Midazolam, and Methotrimeprazine can be prescribed for mesothelioma treatment of breathlessness. Benzodiazepines are anxiolytic drugs that have a sedative effect and use muscle relaxation as pain treatment of breathlessness.
Mesothelioma symptom relief for breathing requires educating the patient, the caregiver and the family in palliative care. Mesothelioma treatment for pain also requires monitoring and adapting mesothelioma pain treatment plans to meet the patient's medical needs, as well as their emotional needs. Listening to the patient's perception of pain is crucial to determining the appropriate pain management treatment for mesothelioma symptoms. The patient feels the pain. With mesothelioma symptom relief and palliative care from knowledgeable and loving caregivers, the patient can enjoy the last years of their life as pain free as medical science allows.
