Someone said that someone they know worked for an asbestos removal team. That it was really dangerous work. Finally law makers passed legislation that people had to stop tearing them down because it was a greater health risk to the workers and people living in the immediate area to tear the building down , due to it is old, it breaks, and not in one piece, than it is to just leave them standing. All it takes is the smallest piece of asbestos in your lungs for you to develop serious lung and other illnesses.
What do you think, could they evacuate the buildings? I see people living in brand new buildings all the time that says "This building is known to the state of California to cause cancer" So the problems are that they are building more buildings with toxins, and/ or leaving dangerous buildings just standing, giving off fumes and maybe not evacuating them. Something seems wrong? What do you think?

Not just apartment buildings but, these signs are also in grocery stores, auto repair shops, the parking structures under malls and hospitals.

I live in Oklahoma and my house has the old asbestos siding on it. I’ve been told that you can’t just remove the siding and take it to the dump. They have some special equipment to check the load you want to dump so that toxic items like this can’t find their way into the water, I guess. I’d imagine people need some kind of permit to handle and dispose of things like this. I haven’t seen the signs you mentioned.

It would cost in the millions to tear them down and once down think about the disposal cost as well as where to put the leftover material. The cost of leaving them alone is a lot cheaper then tearing them down and that is what they are looking at along with the dangers of lung cancer and other illnesses that can come from the material that will drift off with the wind for miles. Just think would you want them to tear the old buildings down and have the loaded dust fly off in your direction or even your families direction? I know I wouldn’t!!

Asbestos is dangerous when the tiny fibers become airborne and we breathe them in. That can cause asbestosis which is linked with lung cancer.
Asbestos was used as an insulating tool in such things as heating systems, shingles, siding and flooring tiles. People who worked with asbestos a lot- mining it or installing heating and airconditioning systems or building with it- started getting asbestosis at high rates . Many older building contain asbestos in some form and unless the building or system is going to be changed or renovated the asbestos can just remain. As long as nothing is disturbing it to cause the fibers to become airborne it is not dangerous. But, as in the case of the World Trade Towers, if the building gets demolished the asbestos would be pulverised and easily become airborne. So, when asbestos is going to be disturbed a licensed asbestos abatement team needs to deal with it. Best to think of asbestos as a sleeping grizzly bear and just leave it alone.
