Ok, my friends and I are planning to do a little ghost hunting this weekend, but the place has asbestos.

We've got surgical masks, but I read somewhere that they don't keep the asbestos out, so... if we were there, say... 12 hours, what are the health risks, if we wear the masks?

There are always health risks when exposed to asbestos. Short term exposure can be dangerous as well, depending upon the quantity of the asbestos in the air and how long you are exposed. I suggest you google asbestos exposure, read up on the consequences, and make your own mind up. You may not know for many years the consequences of your exposure. So is the excitement worth the risk? Your choice.

The apartments i live in have asbestos but they have sprayed a protective coat, and as long as there are no punctures in the ceiling there is no threat. You should be fine as long as there is no dust flying around. And i also think long term exposure is what does the harm, like years.

    Hi,

I have no personal knowledge of the risks except that a building near where I live had asbestos and only highly trained professionals were allowed to enter the site with appropriate equipment, so the dangers must be pretty severe and I would not NOT expose myself to it especially for just the thrill of ghost hunting.

    Give this one a miss!

    Good Luck.

It sounds like you will not be hunting, but trespassing. You have no way to know if there is asbestos unless the building has signs posted. If that is true, stay out. The biggest danger will not be the asbestos , but the condition of the building. You are more likely to fall through the floor. As for the masks, you are correct. A surgical mask will protect you from absolutely nothing. It will protect you from bulk material, but 99% of the harmful stuff will get, not through, but around the mask.
